Awe, fan films. The movies made by zealous fans either to poke fun at their favorite film franchises, or made because that’s actually what they want to see in a movie. There are a few for jut about every franchise, but Godzilla seems a little lacking. Sure, there are plenty of “fan films” out there concerning the Big G, but they are mostly amateur stop-motion videos with jerky animation and no coherency (not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just they’re a dime a dozen) . Yes, there are upper-class stop-motion fan films like “Destroy All G-Fans”, but I’ve yet to find any readily available online. Anyway, this page is to catalog those G-Fan-Films that stand out, the fan films where the effort is there, and fan films that actually flow with coherency.
Parodies
Toho Kingdom Cartoons. A hilarious series of flash cartoons parodying many Toho works at first, but ultimately offering real re-characterization (consistent at that!) to many Toho kaiju, and placing them in odd situations (even filling the leading rolls of Star Wars!). A real highlight of the series is definitely Deutallious, a hyper-active fish/rodent hybrid who got axed from Godzilla vs. Biollante at the last minute and became a sports announcer.
Dramatic Pieces
Godzilla x The Kaiju Killer. A rare case of a serious entry into Godzilla fan films. Godzilla x The Kaiju Killer is the product of Christopher Elchesyn’s outstanding determination. As for how good the film is, I’ll leave to the viewer to decide. What I will say to those who haven’t seen it, is that the movie is indeed very convoluted and difficult to follow so enter the movie aware that every piece of dialogue uttered is plot relevant (well, maybe not “I’ll blow you to cinders!”). Also, realize before hand that the movie is indeed a “darker and edgier” take on things and has a grunge feel that may put off casual viewers of Toho’s Godzilla series. If you liked SyFy Channel’s Showdown at Area 51, though, you’ll love this. Children of Stone A film by Brian Engh. It doesn't have anything to do with Godzilla per se, but the visual effects are well achieved. The subject matter concerns giant monsters, and involves no stop motion, like so many other projects. This is genuine man-in-suit action, and it's wonderful.
Documentaries/Informative
Monster Madness 2 Monster Madness is a series of documentary-style films made by Cinemassacre, AKA James Rolfe, AKA The Angry Videogame Nerd. Each Monster Madness series spans the length of October and usually has an underlying focus. The focus of 2008 was, you guessed it, Godzilla. WARNING: Contains swearing.
In Development/Cancelled
Godzilla x King Ghidorah: Vengeance is still in production, and I’m told it’s a one-man show, so it’s going to be a while.
Another movie entitled, Godzilla Zero Hour was talked about for a while, and even had some articles published in G-Fan magezine following the productions, but as of now the project appears to be “dead”. I haven’t spoken to the director, Franz Vorenkamp in a while, but last he told me was that he’s through dealing with G-Fans because they “sucked all the fun” out of the project. He said that the movie was still on, but that more important projects were first. Good luck, Franz. The surviving stills from GZH can be viewed here.
As usual this is a “get up and go do something” web page and we’d be nothing without our visitors. If you have a Godzilla fan film you’d like to be listed here, e-mail me at dino_geek367@yahoo.com. I delete any message without a proper subject listed, so be sure to label it as “Fan Film” or something to a similar effect. Even if you aren't a fan film maker, if you know of a fan work I missed, send me a link in an e-mail. And to all fan film makers out there, the fandom is nothing without its fans and keep up the good work. That means you guys listed above, too.
The flicks that make us laugh and aren't shameless namedropping reference films in emulation of such bad flicks as Date Movie. In other words, fan films that are actually funny.
Godzilla vs. Godzilla-A fan obviously displeased with the '98 remake exacts his revenge in this flash cartoon. Watch out for cameos by James T. Kirk, Dean Devlin, Jar Jar Binks and many more.
Fan films which demand our respect! Perhaps they aren't preaching the meaning of life, but they are self-serious films balancing human drama and monster action!
Movies that talk about other movies. Documentaries, or informative films.
Movies we've been hearing a lot about, and haven't seen anything of.
